Bat Releasing in Omaha Creates Buzz
At the beginning of April, Nebraska Wildlife Rehab released over 200 bats in downtown Omaha.
Many people are afraid of these small critters, but truthfully, no one should be – unless they are occupying your attic. They are not dangerous creatures and each bat consumes thousands of insects nightly, therefore, offering a benefit to people.
While many people worry about diseases, less than 0.5 percent of bats carry rabies. When a professional removes a bat from your home, it's important to verify with them that you had no contact with the animal. If contact was made in any way, the bat should be tested for rabies. If no contact was made, the bat may be released, but should be held for 24 hours to verify that no contact was made.
